Total FM is not solution for everything

Aside from outsourcing, one topic that consistently attracts comment and criticism, and which draws out proponents and opponents in good measure, is Total FM. Reaction – both positive and negative – is hardly surprising since Total FM is largely synonymous with outsourcing and that is not popular with everyone.

Managing supplies for a major facility

Procurement is a key process within facilities management. The publication of a standard on procurement brings clarity and consistency to an area that has for long been neglected. Too often, decisions on the provision of services – security, waste management, cleaning, maintenance, even IT and catering – have been based on an incomplete understanding of the work involved. That can now be all in the past.

Cloudy times ahead for renewables

Renewable energy is a priority. The EU Renewable Energy Directive commits the UK to meeting 15% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020, compared with 3.8% in 2011. In order to achieve this target, renewable electricity supply from large scale generation will have to increase from around 10% today to around 30% (under the central renewables deployment scenario) by 2020. Further deployment of renewable electricity will have to come from smaller scale generation (<5MW), including micro generation over which there continue to be doubts.

POEs gain importance in the public sector

Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is intended to determine how well an operational facility matches end-user requirements. Put simply, is the design and construction fit-for-purpose from an end-user perspective? Whilst a POE has long been required by facility owners, operators and tenants, its importance in the public sector has been substantially raised under the UK's Government Soft Landings (GSL) framework.

Going, going, almost gone

The UK government regards climate Change as a global market failure. In response, it has set strict emission reduction targets. Although the UK is on target to reduce its greenhouse emissions in 2020 by 34% on 1990 levels, in line with carbon budgets and the EU's target, the longer term goals are more challenging.
